Our Bands:
5th/6th Grade Band
Our band meets twice a week during school to practice the basic mechanics and techniques of performing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. 5th graders may begin on flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. In 6th grade, students may continue on their 5th grade instrument or move on to oboe, bass clarinet, french horn, bassoon, alto/tenor/baritone saxophone, baritone, or tuba.
At the end of 5th grade, students can
-demonstrate proper technique on their instrument
-count numerical subdivisions in 4/4 time
-perform the concert Bb, Eb, and F major scales
-accurately sight read a four-measure piece of music with no accidentals, time changes, or tempo changes
At the end of 6th grade, students can
-count numerical subdivisions in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time
-perform, write, and memorize the concert Bb, Eb, F, Ab, and Db major scales
-describe the form of a piece when it includes codas, D.C.'s, and D.S.'s
-identify accidentals and their function
7th/8th Grade Band
Our band meets twice a week during school to hone individual musicality and develop ensemble skills.
At the end of 7th grade, students can
-demonstrate characteristic tone of their instrument
-perform pieces in 2/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, and 6/8 time
-perform a one-octave chromatic scale ascending and descending
-describe how to tune their instrument
-perform with expression as indicated by the director
At the end of 8th grade, students can
-perform all 12 major scales
-identify the root of a major chord
-describe and apply the pyramid of sound
-demonstrate blending with like instruments
-perform in time without a conductor
-identify which instruments have the melody at any given time in a piece of music
