Goals by Grade Level
These are the individual objectives that each grade level will accomplish by June. Musical skills are scaffolded, or built upon essential skills. This is why it is so important for student success that we cover all the necessary material.
Pre-School/Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten
Students create the basic foundation of musical skills, including developing steady beat, identifying musical textures, differentiating timbre, and pitch-matching.
1st Grade
Students focus on performing rhythms with a steady beat, performing stylistically, beginning to read notes, and improving technique on non-pitched and pitched percussion instruments.
2nd Grade
Students routinely use solfege (Do, Re, Mi, etc.) to read and sing musical passages, identify musical instruments and sort them by instrument family/timbre, work on independence through singing partner songs and rounds, learn expressive markings, and perform in percussion ensembles with ostinati (short, repeated patterns.)
3rd Grade
Students improve their ensemble skills by performing complex rhythms and melodies, singing songs with complex structure, identifying musical forms, and begin independent note and rhythm reading through recorder playing.
4th Grade
Students demonstrate their musical knowledge and abilities through performing in mixed ensembles (recorder/non-pitched percussion/pitched percussion/voice.)
