Weekend Housekeeping and Playing/Singing Tests for Band and ChoirGood afternoon Eagles,
We made it to another Friday! We've sung and danced like butterflies, learned hand clapping games, practiced stick passing routines, and begun rehearsing music for performance. Our first unit is an in-depth focus at maintaining a steady beat, reviewing notation, and learning new rhythms. Believe it or not, our bands and choirs have begun rehearsing music for the Christmas concert. Please encourage your 5th-8th grade students to practice a minimum of 10-30 minutes daily. Consistency is key! Here is what they should focus on this weekend: Beginning Band/Students beginning a new instrument Please practice reading and playing the first three notes of your instrument as illustrated on page 6 of your band book. Your playing test is Exercise Number 4 on that page. Watch out for the rhythms in the last two measures! It is also imperative that we can assemble, clean, and pack away our instruments quickly and efficiently. We still have students leaving late after band. You're wonderful people, but you've places to go and things to do! 7th/8th Grade Band We sight-read several new pieces in anticipation of our upcoming Christmas concert. Please walk through the road map of pg 36, "Sousa Spectacular", and review any new or unfamiliar notes in "The First Noel." You may look at "Jingle Bells", but we will probably not work on that piece again for some time. Our playing test is the Concert Ab Major scale, ascending and descending, which can be found on your 12 Major Scales sheet or in the back of your band book. Beginning Choir We practiced how to sight-read new music and sang an a capella (unaccompanied) spiritual with a descant. There is no formal assessment. Our time Monday will be spent doing voice-matching exercises to improve balance, blend, and intonation. 7th/8th Grade Choir In addition to singing in wonderful harmonies this week, we sight-read several new pieces. Again, no formal assessment, but I do encourage you to practice the pronunciation of "Riu, riu, chiu", following the extensive roadmap of "Song of Mary", and our major scale "Add a Note" exercise with both solfege and numbers. Focus on those intervals. Have a wonderful weekend and happy practicing, all!! Band night is September 4 at 6pm in the gym. Kennelly Keys is renting instruments and selling band books. If you are unable to attend, please send me an email with the instrument you were interested in renting and I will give you information on how to get started!
